Description: I. The steam catapult trials carried out at the Armstrong Whitworth plant, Elswick, and later at the Experimental Aircraft Depot, Isle of Grain. A steam catapult fitted to HMS Slinger is used first to launch a dummy seaplane, then the Fairey F127, Admiralty Number 9, which takes off successfully launched by the catapult. II. Preliminary trials of a Sopwith 1-1/2 Strutter fitted with skids taking off from a set of troughs at an aerodrome. Later the same machine is launched from troughs built into the deck of HMS Vindex, twice at different airspeeds. III. Trials of launching a Sopwith Pup from an experimental deck built on land at the Isle of Grain. The Pup has small running wheels fitted to the underside of its lower wings, and these fit into raised running rails, so that the fuselage and undercart of the aircraft is held clear of the ground. The Pup performs two successful launches from these rails.
Compilation film of various RAF methods of ship-launching aircraft developed in 1917 and 1918.
